Hearing Device Maintenance in Victoria

The Essentials for Peak Performance

Today's modern devices are made to rigorous standards and rarely malfunction. However, the ear can, at times, be a moist, dark, warm environment where electronics can suffer breakdowns if not regularly maintained and cleaned. Here are a few suggestions that can help to keep your devices working more efficiently.

  • Never store your devices in damp environments like the bathroom.
  • Never leave the battery in the device if you don't intend to wear it daily.
  • Leave the battery door open so that air can more easily circulate into the device.
  • Use a "dry aid" kit if you live in or travel to tropical climates. Also, it is a good idea if you are an active person who perspires a lot.
  • Have your ears checked regularly for wax — use drops for your ears on a regular basis if you accumulate wax quickly.
  • Avoid leaving the device(s) near or in extreme temperatures, e.g., never leave devices in the glove box of a car or near a heater.
  • Be careful when using personal grooming products; products like hairspray, aftershave, suntan lotion, etc., can block microphones, volume controls and other controls on the device(s).
  • Remember to remove the tab from the battery before inserting it into the hearing device.

Hearing devices generally have an industry-standard colour coding system, with red representing the right ear and blue representing the left ear. The in-the-ear type devices usually have the colours on the casing, whilst the behind-the-ear devices typically have the colour coding inside or around the battery door compartment. Most ear-mould manufacturers follow the same practice.
